The West Edit
Hire Terms & Conditions
Last updated: 4 October 2026
Please read these terms before booking. By placing a hire order with The West Edit you agree to them. They form a hire agreement between you and us. You are renting a garment, not buying it.
Who we are
The West Edit is an online designer dress hire business based in West Footscray, Victoria, Australia. We operate from our space inside the CLIK Collective shared warehouse at 40 Robbs Road, West Footscray VIC 3012, and do not operate a shopfront. Contact: orders@thewestedit.com.au.
The hire agreement
2.1 We retain ownership of every garment at all times. You have possession of it for the hire period only.
2.2 You must not sell, sub-hire, lend, pawn or otherwise part with possession of the garment.
2.3 You are responsible for the garment from the moment it is delivered to you or collected by you, until it is returned to us or lodged with Australia Post in the return satchel we provide.
2.4 You must be at least 18 years old to book. If the garment is for someone under 18, the booking must be made and the agreement accepted by a parent or guardian, who remains responsible under these terms.
Booking, payment and identity
3.1 Full payment is taken at the time of booking. A booking is only confirmed once payment has cleared and you have received a confirmation email from us.
3.2 All prices are in Australian dollars.
3.3 You must provide a valid email address and mobile phone number with every order. We use them to send tracking and to contact you about your hire. An order placed with contact details we cannot reach may be cancelled and refunded before dispatch.
3.4 Identity checks. We may ask for a photograph of a current Australian driver's licence or passport before we dispatch or hand over a garment, for example where the name or address on an order does not match the payment details. We use it for one purpose: to confirm those details match. We do not take a bond or a security deposit.
3.5 If you decline to provide identification when asked, or we cannot reasonably verify the details, we may cancel the order and refund you in full before dispatch.
3.6 How we handle your ID. If we ask for ID, we hold the image only until your garment is returned to us, then delete it. We do not keep an archive of customer identification and we do not share it with anyone. We handle it in line with our Privacy Policy and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
3.7 We may decline or cancel any order, with a full refund, where we reasonably suspect fraud, where payment and delivery details do not match, or where a previous hire to you ended in non-return or unpaid damage.
3.8 We hold only one of most garments, in a single size. Availability shown at checkout is our best information, but if a garment is unexpectedly unavailable, whether damaged on a previous hire, lost in transit or not returned on time, we will contact you as soon as we know and offer you an alternative piece, a credit, or a full refund of what you paid. That choice is yours.
The hire period
4.1 The standard hire period is 4 days.
4.2 The period begins on the day the garment is delivered to you or collected by you, and ends at the close of the final day.
4.3 Extensions may be available if the garment is not booked immediately after you. Ask us before your period ends. An approved extension is charged at $20 per day.
Delivery and collection
5.1 Collection. Collection is from our space inside the CLIK Collective shared warehouse at 40 Robbs Road, West Footscray VIC 3012, between 9am and 5pm on your hire start date only. Start dates for collection are Monday to Friday. The garment is not available for collection on any other day.
5.2 Postage. Postage is $30 per order and covers Express Post delivery to you and the prepaid return satchel supplied in the bag. We dispatch within one business day of your order, and time delivery to arrive before your event date. We are not responsible for delays caused by Australia Post, extreme weather, or an incorrect address supplied by you.
5.3 We post to the address given at checkout and do not redirect parcels mid-transit. Please check your address carefully. A garment redirected or returned because of an incorrect address may incur additional postage.
Returning the garment
6.1 Return the garment by the final day of your hire period.
6.2 Posted hires: lodge the garment in the prepaid return satchel over the counter at any Australia Post outlet by the final day of your hire period, and keep your lodgement receipt. Your hire period ends on the date of lodgement, not the date the parcel reaches us.
6.3 Collected hires: return to our warehouse at 40 Robbs Road, West Footscray VIC 3012, between 9am and 5pm on the final day of your hire period. If the final day falls on a weekend or Victorian public holiday, return it by 5pm on the next business day. No late fee applies in that case.
6.4 Do not clean, wash, spot-treat or press the garment before returning it. Cleaning is included and is our responsibility.
6.5 Return the garment with all accessories, belts, straps, hangers and packaging supplied.
Late returns
7.1 A late return delays the next customer's booking, so late fees apply at $20 per day, per garment.
7.2 If a garment is more than 14 days late and we have been unable to reach you, we may treat it as unreturned under clause 9.
7.3 If you know you will be late, tell us. We are far more flexible with people who contact us than with people who go quiet.
Care, condition and damage
8.1 Included. Professional dry cleaning, and normal wear from wearing the garment as intended, such as loose threads, a popped stitch, light makeup at the neckline or minor hem scuffing. You will not be charged for these.
8.2 Not included. Damage beyond normal wear, including but not limited to rips and tears, burns, broken or torn zips, missing or pulled beading and sequins, pet damage, smoke odour, and staining that cannot be removed by professional dry cleaning, particularly red wine, fake tan, self-tanner, oil, ink and dye transfer.
8.3 Condition record. We photograph every garment immediately before dispatch or collection, and again on its return. Those photographs are the record of the garment's condition at the start and end of your hire, and we will share the relevant images with you if a damage charge is ever raised.
8.4 Where a garment can be repaired or professionally restored, you will be charged the actual cost of that repair or specialist cleaning, up to the garment's replacement value.
8.5 Replacement value. Every garment in the wardrobe has a replacement value recorded against it, equal to its original retail price. Where a garment is damaged beyond economic repair, is lost, or is not returned, you will be charged that amount. Replacement values currently range from $125 to $699 and we will tell you a specific garment's value on request before you book.
8.6 We will notify you of any damage claim within 5 business days of the garment's return, with photographs and an itemised cost. You may respond before any charge is raised.
8.7 Do not attempt your own repairs or cleaning. It usually makes the damage worse and more expensive.
Loss and non-return
9.1 If a garment is not returned, is lost, or is stolen while in your possession, you are liable for its full replacement value as recorded under clause 8.5, together with any late fees accrued to that point.
9.2 Lodging the garment with Australia Post in the prepaid satchel we provided, and retaining the receipt, discharges your responsibility for loss in transit. Keep that receipt.
9.3 Where a garment is not returned and we are unable to reach you, we may recover the replacement value as a debt, which may include referral to a collections agency. We would always rather hear from you than do this.
Fit
10.1 Every listing shows the size we hold. Please check it against our Size and Fit Guide, and ask us if you are unsure. A size label alone is not a reliable guide across designers.
10.2 We hold only one of most pieces, in a single size, and do not offer backup sizes. Because stock is limited in this way, we cannot offer refunds simply because a garment does not fit or is not what you expected.
10.3 If a garment does not fit, contact us on the day you receive it. We will try to swap you into another piece or offer a credit. Nothing in this clause limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, see clause 12.
Cancellations and changes
11.1 Cancellations more than 14 days before your hire start date: full refund.
11.2 Cancellations between 7 and 14 days before your hire start date: store credit, valid for 12 months.
11.3 Cancellations within 7 days of your hire start date: no refund, as the garment has been held out of the wardrobe for your dates and cannot realistically be re-booked.
11.4 Date changes are free where the garment is available on your new dates and you ask more than 7 days out.
11.5 If we cancel your booking for any reason, including the situations described in clause 3.8, you may choose a full refund, an alternative piece or a store credit.
Your rights under Australian Consumer Law
12.1 Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes those guarantees.
12.2 If a garment is faulty, unsafe, significantly different from its description, or not fit for the purpose we said it was, you are entitled to a remedy, which may include a refund, regardless of anything else in these terms.
Liability
13.1 Other than as required by law, and other than for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, our total liability to you in connection with a hire is limited to the amount you paid for that hire.
13.2 We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, including missed events, travel costs or alternative outfit costs.
Privacy
We collect and handle your personal information in line with our Privacy Policy and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Any identity document provided under clause 3.4 is held only until your garment is returned to us and is then deleted.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, and you and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of its courts.
